Our states have different laws because many, if not most, of our states are larger than European countries. It's ridiculous to think that some corrupt politicians in Washington, DC can make a one size fits all set of laws for a country that exists in 12 different time zones. Perhaps this is why Europe is not the powerhouse of innovation that the USA is. I will say that most of our politicians are bought and owned by the wealthy (Democrats especially). Laws are written to benefit wealthy donors.
Why is large not big enough? Marketing.
If a sales tax wasn't added at the register then those that pay it would be more pissed off at the government than they are when it's added at the register. Usually when the sales tax is seen a customrer has a cart full of groceries, their debit card out and a line of people behind them. It's a bit late at this point to start putting things back on the shelves.

Our education system is currently teaching children to hate their country in addition to grooming them for gay sex later in life. It's hit or miss about pledging allegiance to the flag. Some do. Some don't.
Our children have largely moved on to using curse words instead of calling people jerks and losers. Our Liberal run education system is partly to blame for this.
