Here's a story that I heard when I was in the service back in the 1980s. We were told that it was expected that the Soviet Union would eventually invade Germany and the rest of Europe. There was no doubt at the time. No one in NATO knew whether France would fight alongside free Europe. NATO was expected to be outnumbered and likely pushed back by the Communists.
The expectation for our forces was that American pilots would get 6 kills for every pilot/plane that we lost. I believe that there was a similar expectation for tanks. Due to better training, better equipment and BETTER leadership the American army was expected to bleed and slow the Soviets for up to two weeks while more troops were flown or shipped over to Europe.
You don't do this with DEI hires and promotions. You don't do it with the alphabet army and infinite pronouns.
You do it with merit and competence.
