So the existing big chain grocery stores are closing across Chicago due to shoplifting and other crime. The city is going to step in and set up city run grocery stores to replace them?
At first glance this seem like a worthy cause but is there a reason to doubt that the shoplifting will not continue with these stores? I believe that it will be worse since Mayor Brandon doesn't believe in prosecuting crime (perhaps if the criminals were lighter complexioned?) and the criminals know this.
It's guaranteed that the stores, if ever opened, will lose money due to employee theft and shoplifting. It's also certainly guaranteed that a party loyalist will run this endevour so you won't be getting the best and brightest in charge. I expect graft and corruption but I'm a pessimist and a realist in regards to this city.
I suppose this could somewhat work as long as it's heavily subsidized and not considered self sustaining or profitable. I wonder if supporting food banks might be more worthwhile or giving low income individuals Uber cards might work.
Perhaps the city could do something wild and crazy like locking up their criminals and giving the supermarket chains tax breaks to lure them back.
