Government SHOULD exist to make the life of its citizens better. When it can't do its basic job like law enforcement due to bad policies and stupid politicians then it has failed.
A government that can't put officers on the streets should not have gun bans in place. If they can't protect average citizens (and you know that officers are still patrolling the better neighborhoods) then citizens need to be able to protect themselves.
Period.
