Here's a quick reason why the Space Force is needed.
In the early days of our war in Iraq and Afghanistan our military started using drones. All of the branches of our armed forces were fine with some 20 year old E3 piloting the drones. It was low cost and their video game experience was probably a plus.
The Air Force decided that they only wanted pilots to fly the drones. Bear in mind that it takes years, trained officers and millions of dollars to make a pilot. The Air Force is all about pilots and planes so they didn't mind pissing away the money.
This is a lesson for putting the Air Force in charge of protecting us in space. They showed that they can't be trusted with something that would take money from their old boy pilot's club.
